Networking FAQ's
-
Q:
Can you network my mixed Windows environment?
A: Yes, we can network mixed environments to allow all versions of Windows to talk together.
Q: What server operating systems do you recommend?
A: If you have little or no IT staff and plan to do some of the administration yourself we recommend Windows 2000 Server at this time,
the product is relatively stable and has matured. If you have some IT staff and they are familiar with it, we also still like the
Netware product, though it is more difficult to learn if you've never used it before.
Q: What backup software do you recommend?
A: We recommend Veritas Backup Exec, it is widely used in the industry and a proven product.
Q: I have systems running Windows XP Home edition will they work with a 2000/NT Server?
A: Not in a true client/server relationship as they can not join a domain. In order to join a domain you either need to upgrade to XP Professional or
move them to 2000 Professional if you have spare copies/licenses.
Q: Can you still make XP Home talk to the server without joining the domain?
A: Yes but, you will not be able to take advantage of any centralized security. Additionally, both systems must have matching usernames and passwords to allow any communication.
Q: We are looking into getting a DSL/Cable/T1 Internet service connection, can you make all our computers talk over it with one IP address?
A: Yes, you do not need to pay for a Class C license or multiple IP's as long as you have us install a Firewall or Gateway Router product that can perform NAT (Network Address Translation).
Q: What firewall/gateway router products do you recommend that can do NAT?
A: What we recommend depends on you specific situation. The best thing to do is to contact us to have a site evaluation.
Q: I need to have my T1 Demarc extended and noticed you offer that service with something call ISTP, what is it?
A: ISTP stands for Individually Shielded Twisted Pair, it is a special type of cable in which each pair is shielded which
helps reduce Near-end Cross Talk problems. While in some situations you may be able to use Category Cable (ex CAT5) to extend your demarc we recommend
that T1 Demarcs only be extended with ISTP to reduce the odds of having future issues.
